Organizing

I'm sure I've confessed to all of you that I'm a packrat. I'm actually a recovering packrat, and trying to overcome my "old self". We've all heard the idea that even if an alcoholic stops drinking, they will always be an alcoholic an have to overcome that temptation on a daily basis. That's me with stuff. The cartoon below is kind of silly.

It IS getting better. With our 12th move in 5 years rapidly approaching, I'm trying to purge again. For those of you who have not heard, we are moving to Pine Valley in about 9 days. No, we aren't quitting school. No, we aren't moving anything but ourselves and the truck full of our summer stuff. We will come back to FC in August. Our great friends are moving in for the summer and I decided that some major organization needed to take place before someone else was looking in my cupboards.

Anyway, I've taken some big steps lately:
- Throwing out 6 pairs of black tights from the mission (6 PAIRS??? Yes, glad to see them go. Not sure why I've held on to them for almost 6 years since I got home).
-Got rid of all my Sunday dresses from high school that I knew I would wear all the time when I was a mom. Nein, danke. At the same time, Justin gave away most of his mission shirts (this was actually last Spring).
- Ditching my high school pajama pants that were worn and hideous.
-Gave away sweaters and shirts that I've been hanging onto in case I get super skinny and none of my other clothes fit.
-Matching every sock in the house and throwing out the rest. AND- throwing out socks with holes.
-Organizing tupperware- throwing out stuff with missing lids and getting it down to a manageable size (I threw out all "extra containers" like sour cream and cool whip containers).
-Filing papers that I have had in stacks
-organizing closets

Sorry for the super long post. My main reason for posting is wondering what the rest of you do to stay organized. I would love any and all tips.

Ha! Maggie and am going through the SAME thing. Yes, I still have powderpuff shirts, shorts that I keep for "the pool" once a year, the dress from my wedding dinner that I probably won't wear again, but think it may come back in style.I FINALLY GOT RID OF THESE! I also just threw out nylons... I hate them anyway. I just threw out 3 pairs of pants that I hate wearing, but wear anyway to save money. Geez.
My biggest problem is "keepsakes." like my dayplanner pages with notes from highschool, etc. I am trying to slim them down, but also keep some for journal's sake.
I did throw out all my highschool and junior high school notes last year, yes I admit I kept them. There were some great ones from you Mags!
Now I am trying to go through food storage before our move at the end of the month! Good luck!

Way to go Maggie!!! I think I can, I think I can, I think I can . . . I'm still trying :) You give me hope for recovery from my own packrat habits!

I am not a packrat...or am I? Compared to my mom and grandma, I'm doing great. I try to go through things once a month to get it organized. If you haven't used it in a year, get rid of it. You probably won't use it in the next year. That's my rule of thumb. Anyways, glad you are coming back to Utah...come visit when you are up here. I'd love for you to meet Dixie.

I try to spring clean the entire house once a year, whether it really happens in spring or not. I agree with Suz's rule; if you haven't used it in a year, you don't need it. Bon chance!

Mag--I love it! Good work. The tights were too funny to read about--but good job letting them go.

I am a saver too and haven't moved in 5 years! Moving every year prior to that was so good for me. Now I have to schedule in organizing projects every month so I can keep going through all our things. I actually LOVE the organizing work itself--it feels amazing during and after!

Oh--and I got great organizing book for Christmas with tips and how to for every single space in the house. It has been helpful as I go along (it's titled "Organize Now"...)

I just tell myself that everything is super unorganized becuase we are crammed into a two bedroom apartment. My goal is to one day have an organized bedroom. I all too often get the rest of the house in order and throw the stuff that doesn't have a place into our room. Not quite the sanctuary it should be. I am not much of a packrat though. I am pretty good at purging. My biggest prob is random papers or magazines. I now keep a small notebook in my purse to write all my notes on. And I have a 3 ring binder with plastic covers to put pages from magazines that I want to keep. Miss you!

I love this post - because I think that we are ALL that way in some way or another. It definitely gets better with each move. I'm afraid now that we have a house though I might be in trouble...Gotta love those boxes that you keep because you might want them...but have NO desire for them now.

So, that is fun that you are moving to Pine Valley for the summer...Maybe we can get together sometime?! Let the kids play - St. George isn't too far :) I would definitely love to get together and catch up! Good luck with the move and the organizing!
